The Artists' Reception will be on March 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. They have agreed to keep the show up for three months so there is plenty of time to get into the gallery for a viewing.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The short definition of<i> biophillia</i> is the love of life and all things living. It also encompasses the human response to our environment. Architects have been starting to incorporate the concept into their designs to make interior spaces feel less enclosed, with more natural light and materials that suggest the outside being brought inside.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">There are 40 artists included in the show, all from the Oregon region of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). Our juror was Sue Benner, an internationally known art quilter with a profound connection to nature in both her art and photography. A catalog of all 40 images will be available. Our graphic designer, Lisa Lauch, came up with a stunning logo for us that perfectly captures the feeling of this show. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUcZTdioEgfafuMaLPL5iS8PD0Z-deY1EqPlcEiqPBRjSU1JPQUCsZXqzJoZ0rgGCSEWuEcX8XosTz7GwZvRq0YVbaPjQeDKshm5f2OeJhlrpwkQp2FpykvGNbsr4ON4YxOKnaa46L0oA_gJOcK7nIHFtMMnZ-vDnQwaiZUjClrPDIktVt7YLtIosf-wMA/s469/logo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="469" data-original-width="401" height="346" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUcZTdioEgfafuMaLPL5iS8PD0Z-deY1EqPlcEiqPBRjSU1JPQUCsZXqzJoZ0rgGCSEWuEcX8XosTz7GwZvRq0YVbaPjQeDKshm5f2OeJhlrpwkQp2FpykvGNbsr4ON4YxOKnaa46L0oA_gJOcK7nIHFtMMnZ-vDnQwaiZUjClrPDIktVt7YLtIosf-wMA/w296-h346/logo1.jpg" width="296" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"> </span><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I have enjoyed being on the committee, as a co-curator, for this show.</span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I especially enjoyed making my piece, which was a method I had not really explored before. The background is a whole cloth ombre but the octopus and the crab are hand-painted using acrylic paint thinned with textile medium. I had taken a workshop from Susan Brubaker Knapp using this technique, which is her favorite way to work.</span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"> I have used thickened dye to do the same in the past. Using the paint was easier but it does create a slight "plasticy" feel to the cloth. I haven't decided if the trade-off in ease is better than the more natural feel of cotton painted with dye. <br /></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMnViaeNhOhCGiA6LiADx7e2pV3Mnfq2t1a_WQ6Dwpt3Zwdd2WXajjyZxF_FYEwiEkg-KZzUm_GiymkZY870VSbHYhAvWnDoDoac3z2KKu-rjQhlpmyZFqriURzGEsnbX8AGR9gHr9eB6VsbD55rrRFFJQZ1OfHwsNXpOYGMzSvuXHm9dML6Admu-3fMWY/s2500/Jaszkowski_Laura_OctopusPlay_detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2500" data-original-width="1875" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMnViaeNhOhCGiA6LiADx7e2pV3Mnfq2t1a_WQ6Dwpt3Zwdd2WXajjyZxF_FYEwiEkg-KZzUm_GiymkZY870VSbHYhAvWnDoDoac3z2KKu-rjQhlpmyZFqriURzGEsnbX8AGR9gHr9eB6VsbD55rrRFFJQZ1OfHwsNXpOYGMzSvuXHm9dML6Admu-3fMWY/w358-h478/Jaszkowski_Laura_OctopusPlay_detail.jpg" width="358" /></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">I
searched for images on the internet for the tentacles and the crab and
then used Photoshop Elements to move and rotate each one. Quilting the
background took WAY longer than I anticipated. The horizontal lines out
at the edges were added out of desperation once I realized how long (and
physically demanding) the inner </span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">loops
were going to take to complete. It turned out to be a perfect decision
because those lines keep the viewer's focus on the center of the quilt.
And, it makes the curving lines feel like water moving as the octopus
moves. </span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The bubbles were added to further keep the </span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">viewer</span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">'s eye on the center action. In the end, this might be one of my most favorite pieces I have made.</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"> </span> <br /></p>Laura Jaszkowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01362715058486035975noreply@blogger.com0Eugene, OR, USA44.0520691 -123.086753615.741835263821152 -158.2430036 72.36230293617885 -87.9305036tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1857459210200320957.post-22782818997966135812023-10-19T12:42:00.000-07:002023-10-19T12:43:45.919-07:00Emergence book project<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Every other year the Oregon region of SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) organizes a traveling show. It is open to members of our local region and is always juried. In 2020 when it was time to start on the new show for 2021-2023, covid was rampant. Our committee members met on Zoom and pondered what to do since many galleries were closed. We decided to do a book instead. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Our goal was to have members juried in on the strength of their previous work. The chosen artists would create a new piece to be featured in the book since we weren't sure we would be able to secure any gallery venues. Each artist would have 6 pages in the book following their progress through their design process and the making of their art quilt. We produced a book with 21 artists featured. It is <i>Emergence: Fiber Art from Concept to Stitch.</i> It is available on Amazon in hard cover or as an eBook.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmDZPpP7Bt1JsNGJFr96HyExD8AGOpoSfaiU6VsAKGdBJhpKkupvw3Ztni7DMyJ8IJtGT4fHpNNiqTlwTJf_6G0hlIUeqnw6bY5wRUJwt9ZzfuGphmXTfsCFP8KSxmATEuIk50KnVbDcdhnvEviRmZUcjtVUO2gBZP52rVN6-nTBGx79FS2wwGzOfy9jGZ/s480/BookCover.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmDZPpP7Bt1JsNGJFr96HyExD8AGOpoSfaiU6VsAKGdBJhpKkupvw3Ztni7DMyJ8IJtGT4fHpNNiqTlwTJf_6G0hlIUeqnw6bY5wRUJwt9ZzfuGphmXTfsCFP8KSxmATEuIk50KnVbDcdhnvEviRmZUcjtVUO2gBZP52rVN6-nTBGx79FS2wwGzOfy9jGZ/w400-h400/BookCover.jpeg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;">Here is an example of my first page in the book talking about my inspiration and a montage of a few of the other pages<br /><br /> </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRBgw6GJGu1CCQneE_nU8yKlTWIze6lVPI5x3H07a-7uyP-LYh9L2e9g0neacCkMECqUmqAwz63hJvV-OAUu5MYbdXtZQdbAiDPuX9MEug2E9BWtH91k7JSTjRdMBY4giIvmv9b1fzJvLW4BmWL3p9OzKHuOxDstWMxd4CN1waWgDkLcvUjKnTIkPYUXo0/s480/page62.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRBgw6GJGu1CCQneE_nU8yKlTWIze6lVPI5x3H07a-7uyP-LYh9L2e9g0neacCkMECqUmqAwz63hJvV-OAUu5MYbdXtZQdbAiDPuX9MEug2E9BWtH91k7JSTjRdMBY4giIvmv9b1fzJvLW4BmWL3p9OzKHuOxDstWMxd4CN1waWgDkLcvUjKnTIkPYUXo0/w400-h400/page62.png" width="400" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRBgw6GJGu1CCQneE_nU8yKlTWIze6lVPI5x3H07a-7uyP-LYh9L2e9g0neacCkMECqUmqAwz63hJvV-OAUu5MYbdXtZQdbAiDPuX9MEug2E9BWtH91k7JSTjRdMBY4giIvmv9b1fzJvLW4BmWL3p9OzKHuOxDstWMxd4CN1waWgDkLcvUjKnTIkPYUXo0/s480/page62.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi69PjWl9t1Fg9QAYUoBosAOaB_YOBjelBcTYU67eYt-Xp7HJpbwx9pgf6IQshTpSuqTNWmRa-RNNHR7y2CAoIoCimya712tyR9X-bVIyaHqEnenxoAw4yxrus1-OC8sMRtuXoHWMDnxyXOtoOOrPDFz5V1tDFMr_xkDq8F7KczM-0RtiRFb31R9JgRMYr9/s3941/BookPages.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2355" data-original-width="3941" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi69PjWl9t1Fg9QAYUoBosAOaB_YOBjelBcTYU67eYt-Xp7HJpbwx9pgf6IQshTpSuqTNWmRa-RNNHR7y2CAoIoCimya712tyR9X-bVIyaHqEnenxoAw4yxrus1-OC8sMRtuXoHWMDnxyXOtoOOrPDFz5V1tDFMr_xkDq8F7KczM-0RtiRFb31R9JgRMYr9/w640-h382/BookPages.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div></div><span style="font-size: medium;">Ultimately, we did get the show shown in several venues which have now passed but the book is still available for anyone curious about how an individual goes about designing and making their art quilt.</span><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The pieces that I made for the book sold at one of the last venues. It went on to the International Quilt and Fiber Festival in Everett, Washington where it sold. I will miss having it to enjoy once in a while but the reality is we can't keep everything we make. I have too many old pieces rolled up in plastic and under the bed. </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"> One way I have found to repurpose some of them is to cut them up. SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) has a couple of online fund-raising auctions every year. I make a window frame to the requested size and move it around the quilt until I find a spot that looks good. It needs to have some composition and balance and look like it was always intended to be smaller. Since, like many artists, my style has changed over time, I wouldn't probably ever hang these pieces in a show. (I hope no one ever asks for a retrospective show, though) Here's an example of one I cut up this year. It has many more potential spots for cutting. The original was called <i>Paint the Town</i>, done for a red-themed show.. awhile a person just needs to take the leap! Quilting Arts magazine had a
contest inviting readers to submit their art quilts for a chance to be
on the cover of the magazine. I have never entered anything to one of
the magazine's call for artwork but this one was too hard to pass up. I
sent several images and this one, "Kelp Forest" was chosen as one of
seven finalists.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;">In
the end, it was not chosen as the cover. Kate Themel's "As You Set Out"
was the chosen artwork for the Summer 2023 issue. However, this piece,
and the other finalists, are all featured inside the magazine. It has
been great fun, and quite an honor, to be involved in this project.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"> Here
are a few detail shots of my quilt which was made using commercial and
hand-dyed cottons, one of which is a beautiful blue Japanese ombre
sateen. The background kelp fronds are done with an ombre silk chiffon.
The stitching is all free-motion by machine. I also embellished it with a
few glass beads.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBfnNb2aRdkxigeKV_Vd5T2ZZhT6HR5RwV8fRNsgRfwcn7dckJ0nQ7Cnx7cJMUWg757k3WC4frjB2-KnJRh2YrloXd6q6kfPGrWU3PgNlhLyir82SUop5f2tMt-569MndletsxB8QV8CuzFtp7uWoyh2b74atSKsk71fEMDSvs-OSNOug0WquP_jha2g/s2500/LJaszkowski_KelpForest_detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1509" data-original-width="2500" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBfnNb2aRdkxigeKV_Vd5T2ZZhT6HR5RwV8fRNsgRfwcn7dckJ0nQ7Cnx7cJMUWg757k3WC4frjB2-KnJRh2YrloXd6q6kfPGrWU3PgNlhLyir82SUop5f2tMt-569MndletsxB8QV8CuzFtp7uWoyh2b74atSKsk71fEMDSvs-OSNOug0WquP_jha2g/w400-h241/LJaszkowski_KelpForest_detail.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVoPrj0OtYpNE5BR90wybChHL172Pl6nzKy4r9VbxQfhslzfRAURiulBUljCMxdNrAHg6rtvPYe8vVAetAa0xE9R8b8YY1QlPLV-4OBECh5O_Q4Eu5jfRz7JhWnII0gChFldwBYJRKClZf4ohTC22q6LDUN8kfCLmwVF2CvldqRPG-FqDJ4TG94fai-Q/s2500/Jaszkowski_L_KelpForest_detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1417" data-original-width="2500" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVoPrj0OtYpNE5BR90wybChHL172Pl6nzKy4r9VbxQfhslzfRAURiulBUljCMxdNrAHg6rtvPYe8vVAetAa0xE9R8b8YY1QlPLV-4OBECh5O_Q4Eu5jfRz7JhWnII0gChFldwBYJRKClZf4ohTC22q6LDUN8kfCLmwVF2CvldqRPG-FqDJ4TG94fai-Q/w400-h226/Jaszkowski_L_KelpForest_detail.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /> </span><p></p>Laura Jaszkowskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01362715058486035975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1857459210200320957.post-44193032034032961312018-09-24T22:04:00.000-07:002018-09-24T22:04:15.263-07:00More inspiration, Oregon+<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
As promised in the last post, I have completed a piece inspired by the photograph of the flower seed fields taken near Silverton, Oregon. I called it The Flower Seed Grower. Below is the original photo in case you missed it in the previous post. The size of this piece is 12" by 12". I find that this is a very saleable size to offer in galleries. I did a little more thread painting than usual in the flower fields.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hVruayYonEw/W6m-l8u_Y0I/AAAAAAAAD58/bVik39JZtD8L5exxosDgPY1PTV9LmOKbQCLcBGAs/s1600/Silverton%2Bflower%2Bfieldsa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="649" data-original-width="648" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hVruayYonEw/W6m-l8u_Y0I/AAAAAAAAD58/bVik39JZtD8L5exxosDgPY1PTV9LmOKbQCLcBGAs/s400/Silverton%2Bflower%2Bfieldsa.jpg" width="398" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also made another 12" by 12" piece at the same time. Once again, I found inspiration in one of my photos from Ebey's Prairie on Whidbey Island in Washington State. I added some Queen Anne's lace flowers to change things up a little bit. Everyone seems to enjoy any of these scenes with the barbed wire in the foreground. It must be the contrast of hard with soft, both in the colors and the organic background. I titled this one (what else?) Prairie V.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eP25DvqjM2A/W6nAIOS3vTI/AAAAAAAAD6I/Yc0q-oQT_ZYo2JDMU-aAOq7tqdYUB80VwCLcBGAs/s1600/LJaszkowski-PrairieV-2018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1598" data-original-width="1600" height="398" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eP25DvqjM2A/W6nAIOS3vTI/AAAAAAAAD6I/Yc0q-oQT_ZYo2JDMU-aAOq7tqdYUB80VwCLcBGAs/s400/LJaszkowski-PrairieV-2018.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope these little scenes bring you the sense of peace and timelessness that I feel when I am looking at inspiration photos and in the making of them.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Spring is a beautiful time in Oregon. In addition to all the blooms in people's yards the farmlands come to life as well. A common sight here are fields full of plants being grown specifically for seed. Of course, in order to have seed there must be flowers. Sometimes there are huge swaths of color covering many acres. One of those seed crops is the mustard plant which looks somewhat like the color of processed mustard. It is hard to take your eyes off these fields when lit up by the sun. I had to make a piece like this when a friend sent me a picture she took along the roadside a couple of years ago. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This piece is only 8" by 11" and was made for a benefit auction at the SAQA conference in San Antonio in April. I'm happy to say that it raised $175 for this great organization.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Since the original was a little dark I tweaked it in Photoshop in order to get a truer look. Here is the edited photo which became the quilted piece.</span></span></div>

We decided it is a field of California poppies in front of a field of erysimum, also known as wallflower. Such a stunning combination! I wonder if the farmer planned it that way? I can't wait to make this one up. Hard to believe but I might even have fabric in these colors already in my stash!</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Eventually, it did cover the bridge entirely making for an eerie atmosphere as cars and bridge walkers disappeared into the mist. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When a call to artists went out for a regional SAQA show titled <i>Bridge </i>I knew I had my inspiration hanging in the back of my mind. <i>Deception Pass: Where Are We Headed? </i>is the result. I struggled with this one quite a while because the value changes had to be fairly strong in a short distance, in this case 32", but not make huge jumps or it wouldn't "flow". Here is a detail shot of the stitching.</span></div>

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pk9YDEbnSjs/WKSlaIzeKXI/AAAAAAAACDU/LOqoqrscZ2kfvfKTGei5G6jwF_5z7D0mgCLcB/s1600/Ebey%2527s-Prairie1-800px.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pk9YDEbnSjs/WKSlaIzeKXI/AAAAAAAACDU/LOqoqrscZ2kfvfKTGei5G6jwF_5z7D0mgCLcB/s400/Ebey%2527s-Prairie1-800px.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I know I have shown this picture of Ebey's prairie, located on Whidbey Island in the State of Washington, before but I am surprised by how many times I have come back to it for inspiration. Mostly I have greatly simplified the image as in this 8 x 8 inch piece titled Prairie III.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-geAjlG1CGbc/WKSmqa_bxOI/AAAAAAAACDg/BMIz6frb4pkqMk6yBZ0PjV5L6ezjY8vZwCLcB/s1600/LJaszkowsk_PrairieIII.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-geAjlG1CGbc/WKSmqa_bxOI/AAAAAAAACDg/BMIz6frb4pkqMk6yBZ0PjV5L6ezjY8vZwCLcB/s320/LJaszkowsk_PrairieIII.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Most recently, I decided to really delve into more of the details of the photo. I knew perspective would be critical so the angles of the field lines would be crucial. I might tweak these a bit if I did it over again but this newest work seems to have captured the feeling of spaciousness that I get from looking at the original photo. This is now my fourth piece that has come from just this one picture, Prairie IV.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-66HVKYVfIa0/WKSnTAvyCcI/AAAAAAAACDo/bSiMBUbZEQ4TNRkCXy5Cg1J_JcTlI0adACLcB/s1600/Prairie%2BIVa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-66HVKYVfIa0/WKSnTAvyCcI/AAAAAAAACDo/bSiMBUbZEQ4TNRkCXy5Cg1J_JcTlI0adACLcB/s400/Prairie%2BIVa.jpg" width="395" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a detail image. I have found that I really love stitching the foreground grasses with their grace and illusion of movement from the breeze. One lucky break was the blue sky fabric. I had only one small piece left of this and it had lighter areas that ran vertical to way I needed to lay the piece. Normally I would have wanted the light are to run horizontally but somehow this vertical "stripe" matched up perfectly with the open view to the distant ocean. I had not enough fabric to move it right or left and still fit into my 12 x 12 inch space. Sometimes there is inspiration and sometimes there is sheer luck!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The show that I and three other artist friends, Terry Grant, Mary Goodson and Chris Brown, have been working toward is finally here. Earthy Treasures was our chosen title since we each are inspired so closely by our Pacific Northwest environment. Twigs Gallery is part of the Stitchin' Post quilt shop in charming Sisters, Oregon. This is where the popular Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is held every year. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The artists reception for our show is on July 22 and runs through August 25. I know we have been all working steadily, since at least the first of the year, so it is a nice feeling of accomplishment to have everything hung and ready in the gallery. Here are a couple of pieces that I produced for the show and the inspiration photo following. All but one of these are 12" by 12" in size.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i>Morning Light </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The photo for this was taken driving on Interstate 5 early one morning. I just took a quick shot through the rainy car window.<i> </i>It is amazing what phone cameras can capture.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>High Mountain Pass</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> </i>This picture was taken at a rest stop at the top of the Santiam Pass in the Fall. A forest fire burned a very large part of this area a few years ago leaving many charred trees. Some of them are now being bleached by constant exposure to the sun and harsh winter weather. It creates quite an amazing scene of contrasts especially when the vine maple turns fiery red and orange. Mt. Washington is on the horizon.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I had the pleasure of traveling to the southern part of Oregon this last weekend to see two excellent art quilt shows. Both involve artists that are members of Studio Art Quilt Associates. The first show was in Medford at the Rogue Gallery. It is a juried show put up by the members of the Oregon and Southern Washington region of SAQA. The show is titled <i>Blending Poetry and Cloth</i>. Each piece is the artist's response to a poem or inspirational quote. Although the individual poems were not included on the wall tags there is a catalog that shows the title of the related poem. There are 45 quilts in the show so there was a lot to enjoy. Here are some views of the gallery and the quilts.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Although there are any wonderful quilts in the show, Mandy Miller's piece <i>Georgia Does Midtown</i> is one of my favorites. It is pictured here on the far right. It was inspired by the poem "Chicago" by Carl Sandberg. It has such great depth and movement. </div>

Another very dynamic quilt is by Anne Daughtry <i>A Painted Ship</i> done after "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.I think you can see the texture and dimension Anne archived with her choice of fabrics.</div>

I am pleased to say the my piece, <i>Rolling In,</i> was also chosen to be a part of the exhibit. Mine was inspired by the poem "The Voice of the Rain" by Walt Whitman.</div>

I was also very pleased and proud that the gallery chose this piece to show a portion of on their postcard and as THE image for their listing of the show on the their 2016 schedule of shows. For as long as I have worked at my craft, it feels good to be finding my voice and earning some recognition.</div>

The second show was the juried international SAQA show <i>Concrete & Grassland</i> at the Grant Pass Museum of Art. Photography was limited at this venue so I just snuck a quickie of my quilt in the show, <i>Rift Valley</i>. It was a satisfying way to spend the weekend with others of similar passion.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The end of 2015 brought me to a new job - in retail work. The months have flown by since I last posted, while I got "trained up" and went through the holidays. However, my art work did not lie idle. In December and January I had the honor of being in the <i>Small Pleasures Invitational </i>at the Jacobs Gallery in Eugene, Oregon. All works had to be no larger than 12" in any one direction. <i>Prairie II</i> was one of my pieces. It was inspired by a photograph I took at a place called Ebey's Prairie on Whidbey Island off the coast of Washington. Below is the original photograph. I think you can see that I greatly simplified the scene. The good thing about it is that I can come back to this photo again for future ideas.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Prairie I </i>was also part of the <i>Small Pleasures </i>show. Although this is a marshy scene it is actually a place in what we call Central Oregon, an environment that is considered high plateau desert. Yes, that's right, Oregon has a vast area that is considered a desert ecosystem. Although the landscape can be very stark, it has a beauty that can grab my heart. I have always loved great wide open spaces with an unobstructed view of the sky.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I tried my hand at being a little more abstract in <i>Shangri-La. </i>Moving more toward the abstract has been a struggle for me. I get caught up in the details too easily. Often I start with a fairly abstract design as I build my background but then the stitching detail takes me back down the path of life-like representation. In <i>Prairie I, </i>however, I think it is the detail stitching that makes the piece really shine. In <i>Shangri-La </i>I was able to hold back a little better. So, the battle of personal style continues.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
It has been a long summer of sewing deadlines but it is all good. I have stayed true to my commitment to produce more work and, hopefully, better work this year. I still have several deadlines between now and the end of the year but I am looking forward to when I can assess how things went. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is one of the latest pieces I finished. <i>Precious Land</i> along with <i>Rift Valley</i> were my entries into the SAQA Call to Artists for their next show, <i>Concrete and Grasslands.</i> I won't know until November if either was accepted. I will keep my fingers crossed but I feel very good about this latest piece. Here is a detail of the larger piece. This was made with hand-dyed and commercial cottons with a large amount of free-motion stitching. It has one long vertical seam in it so I can almost say it is pieced. However, the majority of the quilt is raw edge applique.</div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-re4FjCu0C4o/Vfs-eEfXWGI/AAAAAAAABY4/S0ray65r4aQ/s1600/RollingIn800pixels.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-re4FjCu0C4o/Vfs-eEfXWGI/AAAAAAAABY4/S0ray65r4aQ/s400/RollingIn800pixels.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This has been the summer of quilting frenzy. I made it a goal this year to enter more shows than I have ever done previously. So far, I have kept to that goal very well with the unfortunate exception of the entry I thought I submitted only to discover AFTER the deadline that I apparently never hit the Submit button at the end of the form. Oh well. Live and learn. It is a mistake I probably won't make again.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For many of the shows I have been able to use previously made pieces. The last few years of producing an abundance of work has paid off. At the SAQA conference this Spring, one speaker talked about how you have to spend time "doing the work" and have a body of works available before you can start entering shows and applying for grants. I have finally made it to that level, however, many shows still require new work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The piece pictured above is one of those new pieces. Titled, <i>Rolling In</i>, it is another of my attempts to depict landscapes more in the abstract. This was my accepted entry for the statewide SAQA show, <i>Blending Poetry and Cloth.</i> It is inspired by a Walt Whitman poem called <i>The Voice of the Rain. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> </i> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yJdBTHs_uE4/VftBXFKZdwI/AAAAAAAABZE/UAhvf5fA3DQ/s1600/20150818_152109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yJdBTHs_uE4/VftBXFKZdwI/AAAAAAAABZE/UAhvf5fA3DQ/s320/20150818_152109.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I first finished it, two people asked what the big rock was in the upper corner. Now, if one person had said that, I probably would have blown it off. When the second person said it, I knew I had not succeeded in making the focus of the piece entirely clear to the viewer. I added couched lines of a heavy metallic blue thread. I think it succeeds now and has the added benefit of pushing the background further to the back. Here is another detail shot of the stitching.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KDEcyqrYDsU/VftB761wsqI/AAAAAAAABZQ/NarWG6jwvaI/s1600/RollingIn_detail_LJaszkowski%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KDEcyqrYDsU/VftB761wsqI/AAAAAAAABZQ/NarWG6jwvaI/s320/RollingIn_detail_LJaszkowski%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The next piece that I made did not turn out as well as I envisioned but it was accepted into the High Fiber Diet show, Making Our Mark. We were required to incorporate a specific "chop" design somewhere in our piece. I included mine as part of the stitching of the bark in one of the trees. This is not my favorite piece I have ever made but that happens sometimes. As stated in the book <i>Art and Fear,</i> the more art you make the less failures you will have so I will push on. This piece is called <i>Fresh Fall.</i> You can see the "mark" in the lower left corner of the detail image.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are times when I hit inspiration overload. This past weekend our family group spent three days in the part of Oregon that is environmentally known as high desert. Although the elevations are in the neighborhood of 3,000+ feet above sea level, the landscape can be very arid. We camped around a man-made lake formed by damming three separate rivers - the Deschutes, the Metolius and Crooked rivers. It seemed everywhere we went over those three days, the geology and the views of sky and land were breathtaking in any aspect. Some of these elements will make their way into future art quilts but some will just resonate in my soul for a long time to come. What a glorious place we live in if we just go out and look around.</div>

The opening reception at The Arts Center in Corvallis was well attended this evening. The lovely, summer-like evening was probably a contributing factor. There was a wonderful selection of pieces chosen by the juror Johanna Seasonwein. The show includes painting, photography, basketry, mixed-media, 3D, furniture and one textile piece, my <i>Rift Valley. </i>Johanna's desire to include a wide range of media resulted in a beautiful, interesting show.</div>

The Arts Center is a lovely old Gothic Revival style church and is a beautiful venue for showing art. What I like about this place is that they never crowd the art. Each piece gets a chance to really shine on its own. Below is one of the winners of the four Juror's Awards. It is <i>Silver Salmon </i>by Analee Fuentes. </div>

The 2015 SAQA conference opened on Thursday evening with the Ice Breaker event and opening remarks. Everyone had a few minutes to follow the directions of Lyric Kinard in making an intuitive piece of art with just the materials in the center of the table. Halfway through we switched tables and pieces of art. I'm not sure these were masterpieces but it got everyone talking and laughing together. Fiberlandia had been launched!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Friday started bright and early at 8:30 AM. Not sure we were all ready for the bright part! SAQA president, Kris Sazaki, got our attention and enthusiasm level to a high point in no time, though. Our first speaker was Namita Gupta Wiggers. <i>Quilt: A rose by any other name</i> <i>does not smell as sweet </i>had us all thinking about the quilt as a deeper form of art than just a lovely piece hanging on a wall.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I attended two break-out sessions that day as well. Carolyn Higgins talked about mastering social media as an effective tool for marketing your work. I can check some of her suggestions off the list but it looks like I should bite the bullet and have an actual web site, in addition to this blog. Ugh! Sometimes we forget that as artists the marketing part can take as much time as the making of the art. I did love her comment that Pinterest is like potato chips for the eyes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The second session was an excellent presentation by Sue Reno on how artists can develop and maintain a daily artistic practice. Besides her own suggestions, she shared the remarks from 16 successfully practicing art quilters and what worked for them. Many of the ideas I already employ to get me into the studio and working but some were new things to try. It was very helpful to hear how some had many other responsibilities to juggle and still made time for studio work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Rosalie Dace of South Africa led a panel of international students after lunch. They talked about what influenced their artistic style and how they, too, found balance between their creative lives and their studies and home life. The slides of their work were really enjoyable.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yiLOGf-Up9I/VVORu7tV7yI/AAAAAAAABMs/iPDTTKgrvJ8/s1600/Maker-Space2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yiLOGf-Up9I/VVORu7tV7yI/AAAAAAAABMs/iPDTTKgrvJ8/s320/Maker-Space2.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That evening was the Maker Space event in a banquet room of the Doubletree Hotel. There were 10 tables set up with someone at each demonstrating a technique of some sort. I was one of the demonstrators, doing small, simple landscapes using fusible web. This is me talking until my voice was hoarse. It must have been a success because the noise level in the room was very high!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Below is my friend Georgia French demonstrating needle-felting by machine. She said her machines were humming away all evening. It was a fast, and long, 3 hours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DyYpKmQuipM/VVOSHfNl3tI/AAAAAAAABM8/Nc0fSyoZNy4/s1600/Maker-Space3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DyYpKmQuipM/VVOSHfNl3tI/AAAAAAAABM8/Nc0fSyoZNy4/s320/Maker-Space3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The next morning we had an outstanding talk by artist Maria Shell who lives in a remote area of Alaska. Despite that, she has been prolifically showing in her own state well as across the country. She gave us many good tips to get into shows but the main three were: 1 - Do the work. Have at least 10 to 20 pieces ready to be entered before starting. 2 - Enter as many shows as you can that accept fiber art. Follow the entry directions to the letter. 3 - Don't be discouraged by rejection. She only gets accepted to about 40 percent of the shows she applies for. She does think Visions has a special rejection stamp with her name on it, though.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We also had a panel of local textile artists from the Oregon College of Art and Craft. The slides of their work were fascinating and the wide variety of artistic interpretations was delightful. It will be fun to follow their progress as they work through to graduation. The students are Molly Eno, Melina Bishop, Kaylin Francis and Tyler Peterson. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The afternoon was open to anyone who wanted to take a tour of a part of Portland. I took one car load to the Alberta Arts District in north Portland. We had a lovely lunch at a French-style bistro and then explored the shops and galleries up and down the street. Here is Sherrie enjoying a shady moment in the doorway of the Guardino Gallery. We loved having the sun out the whole weekend so out out-of-state visitors could really enjoy the natural beauty of Oregon. One group even took a trip up the Columbia River Gorge to Multnomah Falls.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We got back in time for a nap (yes!) and time to freshen up for the Wild About SAQA dinner and silent auction of small quilts. The dinner selections were delicious and then the fun began. Everyone had some time before and during dinner to bid on their favorite pieces. There were over 100 donations so it took some time to look and decide and then keep up on your bid sheets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kIqDJvcJZNY/VVOViGRNEbI/AAAAAAAABNQ/7skwyEc8_oQ/s1600/20150502_202302.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="205" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kIqDJvcJZNY/VVOViGRNEbI/AAAAAAAABNQ/7skwyEc8_oQ/s400/20150502_202302.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here are two examples of the selections. Each one was originally 6" by 8" and then they were matted and put into plastic sleeves. The Mt. Hood rendition is mine which I made to look like the badges that the "Portland experts" wore all weekend. The second one is a lovely little piece made by Terry Grant.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sunday ended with remarks by Beth Smith and Charlotte Bird on the inner workings of <i>Quilt Visions</i> and how to successfully enter the show. Unless you have actually mounted and curated a show, you have no idea how much work they can be. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We ended the conference with a panel of four local artists led by Jeannette Di Nicolis Meyer. They had actual pieces there to see along with slides of their work. They were Sidnee Snell, Jean Wells Keenan, Bonnie Bucknam and Sheila Finzer. Although I know all four women, it was still interesting to hear their stories of how they got to the level of achievement that they enjoy today. No one is resting on their laurels though and we can all hope to see more of their work in the future.</div>

And, this is now, officially, the longest post I've ever written.</div>

Currently this piece is being shown at the last venue for the statewide SAQA traveling show,<i> Exploring Layers.</i> This show is up at the Artist In Residence gallery at Pioneer Place in Portland, next to the Mark Wooley Gallery. It really is a big beautiful space and the show looks great there. That show is on display through May 18th. Stop in if you are in downtown Portland before then. Here are some images from the show. </div>

The 2015 SAQA Fiberlandia conference is over. As they always are, the conference was alternately energizing and exhausting. There is so much to take in, learn from and be inspired by that it usually takes several days to decompress and filter all the experiences through one's brain. I was pretty tired by the time I got to yesterday's afternoon workshop with Ana Lisa Hedstrom but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. Ana Lisa did a marvelous job of passing along the very beginning skills of doing katano shibori dying which is using stitching (in this case machine stitching) to act as a resist to the fabric dye. I was too busy stitching to get a picture of everyone bent over their machines but here we are bringing the samples up out of the dye pots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IVb3hBHA8Ek/VUgL62jwUyI/AAAAAAAABJw/D_knu9PTH68/s1600/20150503_162830.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IVb3hBHA8Ek/VUgL62jwUyI/AAAAAAAABJw/D_knu9PTH68/s320/20150503_162830.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We couldn't wait to get all those little sodden pieces distributed to the correct person and start ripping open the stitches. The four hours went by in a flash. Below are my four samples that were rinsed out once again today and ironed flat. My stitching lines on the two tan pieces are pretty light but I thought the blue samples came out great. They look like x-rays of plants. Can you see the meadow grasses on the far right and the fan palm leaf next to it? Pretty cool. I can't wait to try more of this.</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ff_LiQHcO-o/VT7Hd4GCM4I/AAAAAAAABIk/7VpybSwthnE/s1600/20150426_134116.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ff_LiQHcO-o/VT7Hd4GCM4I/AAAAAAAABIk/7VpybSwthnE/s1600/20150426_134116.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I spent some time yesterday doing a trial run of my installation piece that will be part of the <i>Moving</i> <i>Outside</i> exhibit at Portland's Trinity Episcopal Cathedral starting on Wednesday, April 29. Of course, the tree I will be working with is going to be completely different than this one in my front yard, but I had to see exactly how my vision might work out. It turned out to be easier than I was expecting. Most of the vintage linens are tied together with a light green ribbon but I discovered that pins will be needed in some spots. About now I was wondering what the neighbors were thinking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKlFQXzOypM/VT7Hc44sk-I/AAAAAAAABIY/z-SJialZVeg/s1600/20150426_133833.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKlFQXzOypM/VT7Hc44sk-I/AAAAAAAABIY/z-SJialZVeg/s1600/20150426_133833.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My piece is called <i>Fragments</i> and I am writing small words or phrases on the ribbons that are recollections of childhood and general life experiences, some good, some bad. I trialed the larger peach ribbon and decided it is too big. The smaller green ribbon is better but I did go today and buy one that is just one size wider. It does show up better. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2Dr3S1AIztE/VT7HePml4fI/AAAAAAAABIg/55LjkCBG2zo/s1600/20150426_134051.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2Dr3S1AIztE/VT7HePml4fI/AAAAAAAABIg/55LjkCBG2zo/s1600/20150426_134051.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
The only change I need to make in the actual installation is to cover the round doily with another corner of lace. The way it looks here it reminds me of a lost hubcap that someone has nailed to a tree. Good thing I tried this at home first. Once the show is hung in the Cathedral courtyard I will post pictures of my actual piece and the other pieces as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
On another note, the badges for the volunteers at the SAQA conference, starting Thursday, are done and ready to be delivered. Each one came out slightly different from the next one. I actually made 13 because one of them was my prototype on which I made all my mistakes. I hope everyone enjoys wearing them.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's only a few weeks away! SAQA's (Studio Art Quilt Associates) national conference is coming to Portland, April 30 through May 2. All the Oregon members are excited to have the conference in our own part of the world. These conferences are a great time to connect with any folks whose names we have seen in publications over the years but never met in person and reconnect with old acquaintances. Many new friendships are made and everyone goes home re-energized to keep creating and networking.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The little quilt pictured above is my donation to the fund-raising auction that will be held the weekend of the conference. It is small, just 6" by 8" and will have a mat around it for the auction. I called it Fiberlandia in honor of the conference being held here in Willamette Valley country. This could easily be a scene from the Hood River Valley, just east of Portland, as well. I'm hoping the bidding will be high on this piece since I made it to complement the 12 badges I am also making for the local volunteers to wear.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vJoRL_V0uTk/VR2z3PcX9KI/AAAAAAAABA4/1qOLJ7Zrdww/s1600/Badges.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vJoRL_V0uTk/VR2z3PcX9KI/AAAAAAAABA4/1qOLJ7Zrdww/s1600/Badges.jpg" height="182" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These are even smaller than the donation quilt. They will be about 3" square when finished. I'm still trying to decide how I will put the lettering on. I'd like to have it on a piece of white silk organza (attached just on the edges) so it could be removed later if the recipient wanted it to keep as a little piece of art. I'll see how that goes once the main stitching is finished on each piece. Hopefully, they will be desirable enough to generate a lot of bidding on the larger piece.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yes, I am up and running. This is Judy and Viki, my first students in the new space. We had a blast doing Thermofax screen printing. I had to think hard about buying a thermofax machine but I think it will get used often enough to make it worth the purchase. Judy used a design from one of her machine embroidery programs that she plans to combine with stitching. Viki worked with some beautiful hand-dyed fabrics to further enhance them.</div>

Here are a few pictures of the classroom in (kind of) magazine photo state. It can't be too tidy or I can't find anything!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Right behind me is an area with a small sink and washer and dryer for working with dying projects. I hung a quilt there that was made by Terry Howard Grant called "When It Rains I make My Own Sunshine". I will have to protect it with a plastic sheet when working with paints or dye.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is going to be a really fun space to work in as my own studio as well as being a delightful classroom space. I will try to post pictures of what this room looked like before it was transformed by my dear contractor husband. It has taken about 6 months of work on his part, in the beginning, and then on my part getting it organized. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is how I used the closet that formerly had wooden bi-fold doors across the front. I love these baskets from Ikea for storing fabric. They get a little heavy it I stack the fabric too high but it is very easy to see what is in each one. I organize according to color mostly but hand-dyed and themed fabrics also get their own basket.</div>

<i>A Color Runs Through It</i> ends on February 6 at the Maude Kerns Art Center. It feels like a short month. I visited the show three times but the last time was the best. I was there when it was quiet and I could really take the time to stop and study individual pieces. I noticed texture and stitching details I hadn't seen until that day. Everyone did such lovely work and I know they worked hard to have at least 10 pieces for the show. Here's a mini tour in case you can't visit in person.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Our show <i>A Color Runs Through It</i> opened last Friday evening with a nicely attended reception. The other four artists in the show with me are Georgia French, Diane English, Deb Sorem and Paulette Landers. Each of us worked mainly with a specific color. Georgia picked yellow, Diane picked purple, Deb had green and Paulette chose red. My color was blue. We also could use the color directly across the color wheel from our chosen color, plus black and white. For me, that meant orange. The image above is the third piece I made in the series and I called it <i>Canyonlands.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Since I was supposed to be working mainly with blue, I thought <i>Canyonlands </i>leaned a little too far toward the orange shades. So, I made this next piece called <i>Moonrise. </i>Orange takes more of a back seat in this piece even though the moon itself is the focal point of the piece. From a distance it does read blue.<i> </i></div>

My last piece in this series is <i>Winter Solstice.</i> I love working with snow scenes. It always makes me feel calm in the way that the world becomes hushed and quiet when a layer of fresh snow absorbs all sounds. I like to experience the feel of the cold in the scene while working all snug and warm in my studio.</div>

In my next post I will post pictures of the 5 smaller pieces I made at the gallery's request. I am also going back to the gallery to take some pictures of the whole show. I was so busy chatting at the opening, I forgot to take any pictures that evening!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, moving sure took it's toll on my blogging. I see I haven't posted since May which was about the time our house went on the market. It has been a whirlwind ever since. Believe it or not, things are actually looking calmer as the end of December approaches.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been working in the studio in spite of all the moving uproar, working hard! I am part of a show at the Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene for the month of January with a group of five art quilters. We each chose a main color to work with in all our pieces. From that we were allowed to use the color across the color wheel from our chosen color and any neutral colors. The kicker? We each needed to provide five main quilts, plus five other pieces, which could be old work. However, in my crazy head, I decided that even the additional five pieces needed to be new work. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose the color Blue. That has meant working with Orange as well. The piece pictured above is called<i> Altitude.</i> It is a pretty obvious use of blue and orange. A second piece, below, is a more subtle rendition of that color combination. I called this one <i>Fallow Fields. </i>The five main pieces each measure 24" wide by 30" high.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a small detail of the larger piece. I had not yet finished the hand stitched rain lines when this was taken but I think you can see where I'm going.<i> </i></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next post will show more pieces. I am currently working on #8.<i> </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> </i>Boy, it feels good to be "back"! </div>

<i> </i>Our High Fiber Diet group show, <i>Simply Red,</i> is at its third venue, The LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus in Corvallis, Oregon. We had a wonderful opening reception on Monday evening. There was a rousing orchestral concert going on in one of the performance halls so we heard snippets in the background as people came and went through the doors. It is a beautiful venue and there was a nice turn out for the event. Here are some photos of the other work in the show. I got a little bit of pleasure out of having my piece, <i>Paint the Town</i>, used on the artist name tags that evening. <br />
